Learn to Make a Layered Cocktail (Just in Time for New Year's Eve!)
There are only a few days left in 2018. And that means it is time to plan my New Year’s Eve cocktail. We usually have a pretty chill New Year’s Eve at our house because we inherited the tradition of making Huevos Rancheros for all of our neighbors every New Year’s morning. I take it so seriously that I even spent an entire day learning the traditional recipe from the prior owners of our home. This is the real deal. Last year I served 65 servings! So to celebrate New Year’s Eve we usually have a few friends over, play games and prep the food for breakfast. But we ALWAYS have a fancy cocktail while doing it.
This year I am making a layered blood orange and rose lemonade cocktail.
2 Blood Oranges
A Bottle of Fentimans Rose Lemonade
Vodka (your preference but I really love Titos)
Prosecco (I recommend LaMarca)
A Fancy Champagne Glass
A Fun Garnish - I used a sprig of lavender and a couple of fresh cranberries. A slice of blood orange or a lime slice would also look great.

Start by making your blood orange simple syrup.
Add 2 cups of filtered water and 1 cup of sugar to a sauce pan. Heat until the sugar dissolves. Then add the juice of 2 blood oranges. Bring your mixture to a boil and then turn it down to simmer until you have reached your desired thickness. The thicker it is, the more defined your layers will be.
The secret to creating your own layered cocktail recipes is understanding the density of your liquid ingredients.
Start with the heaviest liquid on the bottom and then add them in by density. The more their weights differ, the more defined your layers will be.
To layer your cocktail, pour in your blood orange syrup followed by about an once each of rose lemonade, vodka and prosecco. Top with a garnish and you are ready to ring in the new year!
